the woman in his life (Poem)

the woman in his life
(eve)

as men will
adam put on a face
the color of a starling's back

mastering expression
of an old and ancient story

God only knew
adam's manhood

its quick ceremonies
and pretty jewels
grown wanting enough

knowing the thing his body needed
his creator pried a rib
from adam's breast
and gave the name of eve

beautiful she was
and full, a hungry secret,
a soft echo of breath

as men will
adam led her away by the wrist
calling her woman

Maureen,This is so deep! I felt so stirred--knowing the story, thinking of the rib "pried" from his breast.

I so enjoy coming here. Writing poetry is fairly new to me and I learn something each time I visit here. You give words such life. Thank you for sharing your gift.

"...a soft echo of breath." Poignant and haunting words-they stay with me.
