Promise-Dreaming (Poem)

Promise-Dreaming

What omen
Yet awaits
The telling,
Brings us to dreaming
The field empty,
Birds falling from sky
On a beach
In the moon's light?

It's enough
To be.

*

It's enough
To be
In the stars' light

To be
The child,
Shell to ear,
Who taught the dance
And songs of sirens
Riding whale backs.

It's enough
To be
Dreaming of promises
So elemental,
As a star lets glisten
Sapphire wings and emerald eyes,
Dragonfly with dew of tongue,
Feathers of swan so white,
blackbird, thrush.

In dreams,
The child
Brings us to dreaming.

In dreams,
Dreaming of promises
Is enough.

*

Enough is enough
In dreams.

*

It's enough
To be
Where each wanders
Dreaming of promises
That we might
Trip through
Fog's deep ink
And sit upon the shore
And cast one final
Adieu.

To look to the light
To be
Moon's light.

And hide not.

*

It's enough
To be
Wondered at

To be
Held as a star
In stars

To be
Song echoing
Off water's edge
Tender
As morning light.

To be enough
Is enough
To be in dreams.

*

To be in dreams
Is enough
To be.

*

My word
To you
Did move us
Enough:

It will take
Another siren's song
To wash away
In our memory
So elemental
As time
What dreams are made of.

*

To be
Enough
Is enough

To be
Dancing
Into a sky of glisten.

A sky ink-blue,
Ground-touching,
Is enough.

*

There is a star
That holds your promise.

It's enough.

*

Look to the light.

Where you are
He might be.

The one place
He might be
He might be alone,
Unquietly bending limbs,
Dancing siren's lament,
Dreaming of promises.

*

So are we

Dancing,
Dreaming of promises.

Dreaming of promises
Lasts not long.

Dreaming
To be
Lasts not long.

*

And where you are
So are we:

A child amidst us
Pointing to a dream
Held deep,
Unfathomable.

*

To be
On a beach
In such deep water
Cream of waves
Frothed and churned
To wash away
What dreams are made of

Is enough.

*

Cast one final
Adieu.

Sea
Sings yet of you.

The one place
Shell and seaweed
Beached together
Mix with salt tears
Glistens.

*

In our memory,
The child
Pointing to a dream
Come true
Forever lingers.

*

In dreams
Beneath sky and
Arc of stars,
Siren's song
Catches wind:

It's enough
To be.

To be
Enough
Is enough.

There is a star
That holds your promise.

*

Held close,
The child it was,
A child amidst us,
Forever lingers.

*

In dreams
Where you are,
So are we.

It's enough.

This poem consists entirely of tweets I offered during our bi-monthly TweetSpeakPoetry jam on Twitter on January 5. The lines mostly are how I tweeted them, although I have combined or recombined some lines or words, and I added punctuation throughout. I did not use all of my tweets.

I put this poem together for our upcoming RAP Friday at High Calling Blogs. The challenge: to post a poem on any subject or to read the results (here and here) of our poetry jam, choose an animal, a type of party, and a setting, and then write a poem incorporating all three.

You'll find links to RAP Friday contributions in the Comment box here. (Be sure to check the site on January 15 for all the links. They'll be added throughout the week.)

Beautiful, Maureen! It reminds me of the Hebrew word/song ... dayenu ... "It would have been enough ... "

One of my favorite parts...

"It will take
Another siren's song
To wash away
In our memory
So elemental
As time
What dreams are made of."

But really all of it has a drifting quality that takes me away.
