Wednesday Wonder: All Things Small

Lea Redmond loves all things hand-made and small. She's been making things since she was a child, starting with a mini Coca-Cola machine made from paper. At Leafcutter Designs, her perhaps not-so-small business in Oakland, California, where she lives, Redmond crafts tiny matchbox theatres, recipe dice (14 to a jar), trade tokens one-and-a-half inches in diameter, 3-D tactile poems, four-inch paper umbrellas (20 to a jar), hand-silkscreened pedal power flour sacks just 5 inches by 9 inches, tiny "wonder cabinets" that go for $1.00 a drawer, and other charming, delightful, and fun stuff, such as earrings "for spontaneous seeding".

Redmond's custom work ranges from miniature greeting cards, letters, and invitations to teeny boxes containing even smaller objects secreted within a miniaturized newspaper.

Since 2008, Redmond has been offering what she calls "The World's Smallest Post Service": a portable office of sorts that she sets up in shops and cafes in the Bay Area and other locations to bring her creative tiny letters transcription service to the masses. Her tools: a miniature, wooden roll-top desk, miniature wax seal (she imprints your initial), magnifying glass, and packaging materials. Redmond even does custom bulk mailings. The video below shows what's possible when you let your mind wonder the way Redmond's does.

I hope those are strong glasses she's wearing -- such painstaking work -- wow!

I have always been fascinated by people who create 'tiny' -- like sculpted rice -- amazing!
