All Art Friday Spotlights

✦ Widely exhibited painter Freya Grand has an uncommon eye for landscape, which she invests with a deep sensibility of beauty and aliveness. I'm particularly taken with her series Ecuador and Peru, Ireland and Scotland, and Journeys to Other Places. Grand's wonderful paintings are imbued with nature's own mysteriousness and foreboding; they can be at once both moving and unsettling. A solo exhibition of Grand's work, "Freya Grand: Minding the Landscape" (February 1- May 5), is scheduled next month at the National Museum of Women in the Art, Washington, D.C. Plan to see it if you're in town.

✦ At the invitation of Olafur Eliasson, 18 filmmakers produced short films about life and light using Little Sun solar-powered lamps produced by Eliasson and Frederik Ottesen. Sixteen films are here.

✦ Carson Ellis's illustrations will delight. A resident of Portland, Oregon, Ellis has provided art for a number of best-selling books, including The Composer Is Dead by Lemony Snicket. Her blog is full of interesting work.

✦ You'll want to spend some time browsing Arizona resident Ernie Button's project portfolio. His Cerealism and Vanishing Spirits: Remains of SingleMalt Scotch projects are just two of his out-of-the-ordinary inspirations. (My thanks to Sandra Beasley for the link to Button's site.)

✦ If you missed it on my FaceBook page, here's the concept trailer for Breakthru Film's feature-length painted animation Loving Vincent. The concept is "a murder mystery about the life and death of Vincent van Gogh told through revealing interviews with the characters from van Gogh's paintings." The film is scheduled to release in 2015.

✭ Two floors of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts have been given over to "The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making Their World", continuing through April 7. On view are more than 200 works, organized thematically (sections include self-portraiture, politics, sexuality, family, and nature); among the artists represented are Alice Neel, Louise Bourgeois, Ana Mendieta, Kiki Smith, and Beatrice Wood. The artworks, including paintings, photographs, drawings, watercolors, pastels, collages, prints, ceramics, and other media, are part of the extraordinary Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women, which Alter presented to PAFA as a gift in December 2010. A selection from the collection will tour nationally, beginning this summer.

✭ In Kansas City, Missouri, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art continues its "Cabinet of Curiosities: Photography & Specimens", which seeks to address questions of why people collect, what they collect, and how specimens are organized and also presented photographically. Examples of curiosities range from microscopic mites to a telescopic image of the moon's surface to pulled teeth from Peter the Great's collection (the Russian czar pulled the teeth himself; see image). The exhibition runs through February 10.

The exhibition, "MCA DNA: William Kentridge", which continues through March 17, also includes in its entirety the accordian-fold torn-paper collage Portage (2000), which uses in its background pages from a vintage French-language encyclopedia (Le Petit Larousse Illustre).
