Listening Post (Poem)

Listening Post

I want to open my door,
tell you to come in, sit
down, watch that first

word form and then go
on to another. You might
try harder to tune out

the extraneous, adjust
your pitch, push buttons
to change the frequency

of any messages incoming.
I am not dumb to gestures.
Shouting's not necessary.

A man's tongue can be loud
and his heart say nothing.
Silence fills its own deep void.

This line between hearing
and not can be moved, signs
made once re-paraphrased.

Your fingers across lips are
but a caesura. Leave them
open. Accept this one kiss.

Miss Maureen - You took me on an unexpected turn with those last three lines.

Wow.

Blessings.

Maureen, you capture so well here the various textures of intimate communication… and its fragility. Every line here is pitch-perfect.

sorry to copy half your poem there...but it really spoke to me about poetry/speech/communication...esp the second part on the line moving...and signs made...

I think I've met her... : ) We color things with our own experiences, and I saw an event...

What stood out strongest for me is the image of a man's tongue can be loud and his heart say nothing. Indeed, sometimes for some it seems easier to clack one's teeth than to feel something deep inside

The tender expression has captured me. You weave words so well. I enjoy this.

after reading the last stanza, I had to go back and read this again...but jumps upward before starting once again from the top...the piece totally turned around on me and took new meaning. I really enjoyed this poem.

Some intriguing tones... melodic yet startling. Wonderful piece.

I liked this - and liked how at the end, touch says more than words...

What a sensuous and sensual response to poetry. Elegant and dense metaphor. Very satisfying. Loved it.

Mine is here this time: http://hollyheir.wordpress.com/2014/03/04/unfolding/

You've no idea how pertinent this poem is for me at the moment! Really fine work. That line works very well for me, too:

A man's tongue can be loud
and his heart say nothing.

I felt this was the heart of your piece... lovely

Quite often than not listening translated into observations brings out poetry - silence fills its own void...loved that! a stellar close.
