* The quote is the concluding line of Pasternak's poem "Hamlet in Russia, A Soliloquy", written in 1946, as translated by Robert Lowell. The translation is found in Lowell's Imitations (Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1961); it was published in Harper's Magazine in September 1961.
