Snow and Ice
We speak,
you bracing
your words
of snow
against my slivers
of ice.
Picture steles
deflecting
the sound
of loss
without
the wanting.
What breaks
apart
becomes two
floes stilled,
missing
their chance
to collide
below water.

Stunning images... yet a difficult road for communication between two souls. Nice write.
ReplyDeleteAntarctic emotional freeze. Grief.
ReplyDeletecold
ReplyDeleteOooh, gripping, chilling, beautiful, and sad.
ReplyDeleteWhat keeps running through my mind as I read this is "Fire and Ice." And I wonder which is more destructive. Fine poem, Maureen.
ReplyDeleteA frosty conversation no doubt!
ReplyDeleteSo you have a mind of winter right now, huh.
ReplyDeleteSnow and ice are often lumped (packed?) into the same category, but I like how you show their textural difference, and how language that seems to come from the same place can leave us drifting apart.
Into the depths of intimacy... I especially love these lines, Maureen;
ReplyDeleteWhat breaks
apart
becomes two
floes stilled...

' the sound of loss/ without the wanting..' a haunting sound that would be. The close is an excellent trope for the elusive quality of intimacy and true understanding
ReplyDeleteoh this is emotive...the freezing of two hearts, icebergs slowly drifting apart, not even kissing the surface...
ReplyDeleteSad.....
ReplyDeletegripping image... makes me feel sad...
ReplyDeletebut it is "without the wanting" that is so haunting.
Beautiful and chilling. Lovely. I sat on a high berth (15 feet) of ice at Lake Michigan's shore one winter and watched ice floes below, mesmerized.
ReplyDeleteCold - colder than an ice rink in North Dakota in the winter. Zam snow in the compressor room and ice outside and in. That's the feeling of this poem. Funnily enough, that's how I feel when I get angry - empty and really cold. Excellent exploration in minimum amount of words. You rock!
ReplyDeletethis is so sad but yet it will grip you and has a chill to it at the same time
