Blue-Blooded Love (Poem)

Blue-Blooded Love

Needing a lift
to reach his lips

she stepped into
her wedged-heeled clogs,

taking extra care
to roll up the cuffs

of her slim-leg jeans,
two inches exactly,

so the back buckles —
a modern touch he liked —

might show some hint
of cream-smoothed

ankle he could unwrap
from its bindings.

Her Levis and leather
soft and buttery

yield to his attentions
most every time, just like that

first time his sneakered flat
feet met hers, toe to toe,

behind that corrugated staging
ground for their rendezvous.

Safe from moms' and pops'
and field hands' gaze,

even the window blind
to their nudgings, their kisses

burn another new cyanotype
onto the wall, holding them

fast to their promises.

  2. You know, I had the exact same thought when I looked at this picture...I saw her taking care to get the roll just right, etc.

  3. One of the most arresting things about this photo is the juxtaposition of the platforms and the sneakers, and then the relative newness of the jeans with the old, aging background. But love doesn't care about juxtapositions. Good poem, Maureen.

  5. Liked the detail of the levies and rolls. Hoping to be taken out of her shoes behind that shed. Great write!

  6. Your focus on the details, the conscious decisions that went into her attire, made me look at the picture completely different than I had. Great poetry and interpretation, Maureen.

  8. Deft repainting of the image with words that shadow feelings like the shadowed print on the wall.

  12. Nicely done. Your concrete images held me fast, all the way through.

I like especially the attention paid to her ankle.

  15. I love the last three lines, Maureen! And how you handled the opening stanzas that bring out an image for me of a slow dance, focusing on their looks, their clothes. I like how you sustain the pace until their dance is sealed with a kiss. Thank you.
