Self-described "wanderer" Tishani Doshi is a poet, novelist, journalist, and dancer who performs around the world. She also writes short stories and biography.
Doshi's debut collection of poetry, Countries of the Body (Aark Arts, 2006), was awarded the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. Her second book of poems, Everything Begins Elsewhere, was published abroad (Bloodaxe/UK and HarperCollins/India) in 2012; it made its American debut in July of this year, in e-book format, via Copper Canyon Press. Her poem "The Day We Went to the Sea" won the 2006 All-India Poetry competition. Doshi's novel The Pleasure Seekers (Bloomsbury USA, 2010) has been translated into Spanish, German, French, and Italian, and is available in the United Kingdom (Bloodaxe Books, 2012) and India (HarperCollins, 2012).
Doshi has published editorial pieces in The New York Times; author interviews in New Indian Express, The Hindu, and Elle (India); criticism in The Hindu, Biblio, and New Indian Express; and travel writing in The Hindu, Financial Times, and The Guardian.
In the video below, filmed in Ledbury, England, in July 2012 at the Ledbury Poetry Festival, Doshi reads five poems from Everything Begins Elsewhere: "The Art of Losing", "Walking Around (after Neruda)", "The Memory of Wales" (a sestina), "The Adulterous Citizen", and "Homecoming". The video is an excellent introduction to Doshi's wonderful work.
