morning's cloud ascends—
the summer snow burns and blinds
stars dim in black rain
*
fluttering obi sashes
white feathers gone colorless
shrill the evening sounds
*
torn paper lanterns
pine's open arms unneedled
August mountains shiver

Powerful haiku! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletePowerful play in that "cloud" of line 1. At first I read it as lovely nature! Ha! Then of course realized what this sinister cloud really was.
ReplyDeleteThe whole poem is full of rich understatement like this… which is wht makes the poem so effective.
Thanks for re-minding us of that horrible day.
