Sweethearts (Poem)

Sweethearts

Who gets the purple heart?
The one that declares Real Love
or begs Hug Me? Every sugar kiss
turns up another LOL warning:
Be Good. Be Mine. Luv Me.
As if True Love can be commanded
in a soft pastel color, the message
from your sweetheart hidden
in a box of unnatural Necco flavors.

Maybe your Awesome Lover Boy
is just a Smile away, your Purr Fect
ending a Class Act with a Good Boy
instead of a Cutie Pie who can Spice It Up
when he's In the Mood or just Let It Be
when he needs to Chill Out.

You Bet we're all looking for romance,
checking WWW[dot]Cupid for pointers,
willing to Get Real, Start Now, and sample
What Ever we can for a little Sweet Stuff.
Go ahead! Be somebody's Angel even
if you have No Clue. It's never For Ever.

And Always remember this: Tastes change
but the Recipe 4 Love remains a secret.
No Way I'm not going to Go Fish
after hearing My Baby tell me
to Dream On.

This poem is inspired by the many and varied Sweethearts® candy sayings you find in those ubiquitous little one-ounce boxes from Necco (New England Confectionery Company), which manufactures some 8 billion conversation (ahem) pieces a year. The candies are called Love Hearts® in the United Kingdom, and now come in a Spanish version, as well as chocolate and "tart" flavors. Me? I tend toward the Classic.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy day of love (minus all the commercialism) to you, my talented friend. May your day be filled with inspiration and pastel colors dripping meaningful and whimsical phrases that capture your heart.
