A Feeling Grew Into a Hope (Poem)

A Feeling Grew Into a Hope

Worry it
started out

a feeling
then grew

into a hope
spun

like the needle
of a compass

setting
not north not south

direction less
the point

than finding
one's own way

amid the churning.

         *

A feeling grew
into a hope.

It started out
a worry whorled

the way a conch
flips and turns

until out
goes inside

and deep
hard-shelled

feeling become invisible.

Out of warm waters
ocean's pink-lipped horn

trumpeted the sound
of tears evaporating

in motions chiming
to the heart's recovery.

I wrote these poems for Carry on Tuesday, which each week provides a prompt that participants are to use wholly or partly in an original poem or prose piece.

The prompt for Tuesday, September 28, consists of the first two lines of Regina Spektor's song "The Call": It started out as a feeling / which then grew into a hope. (Go here for the lyrics to the song and a playlist.)

To read other Carry on Tuesday contributors' poems or prose for Prompt #72, go here.

I also offer these poems for One Stop Poetry's weekly "One Shot Poetry" event. Be sure to visit the site late Tuesday afternoon and every Wednesday for links to the many contributors' poems.

Now I'm burning to know more about this little scene described here. What is the call? How does it go from worry to hope?

I could use a bit of that right now.

without hope, our heart would know no recovery it seems ... without hope, life is pretty meaningless ... perhaps that's why your last line is so powerful to me

Beautiful! I loved the twists and turns it took, like finding one's way does tend to.

So much said in so few words. Simple, but not simple-minded, like another poem I just read. Stunning piece, with thematically tight inherently-progressive images and theme.

Your work, while subtle and beautifully crafted, has great power and evokes such a profound emotional response. Especially liked these "Out of warm waters

This birthed conch into my vocabulary. Beautiful image of shell-less worry to armored hope.
A process that we go through quite a bit in this life of faith. beautiful...artful

a worry whorled...this remains in my ear.

whir/worry/world/whirled/whorled--so resonant.

Beautiful poem. I loved the fact that a simple feeling good or bad slowly transformed into a feeling of hope. That any feeling can be transformed into hope is a great thought. Great One Shot!

You are a word artist, that is evident here in your beautiful poem.

I especially liked "worry whorled" and the entire segment about the conch. (I see Hannah/The Storialist, a blog poet friend, recognized the same word combination, it stands out beautifully.)

Lovely poem.

These lines --
tears evaporating
in motions chiming
to the heart's recovery
-- give me a sense of hopefulness.
