Filmmaker, illustrator, and author William Joyce (b. 1957), whose wonderful books I often read with my son, and co-director Brandon Oldenburg used computer animation and 2-D animation, among other techniques, in creating their marvelous The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Described as an "allegory about the curative powers of story", it is a much-deserved winner of an Oscar.
Here's the 15-minute short. I dare you to not become engrossed.

This excellent interview with Joyce includes a bit about the making of The Fantastic Flying Books, which is available in an inexpensive interactive narrative format at iTunes. (Apps Magazine gave it an App of the Year Award in 2011.)
