Thought for the Day

Language. . . can allow all of us, even the congenitally blind,
to see with another person's eyes.
~ Oliver Sacks, The Mind's Eye

I recently read The Mind's Eye, which contains some extraordinary stories of how the non-sighted and those with visual disorders compensate and often "see" what the sighted cannot.

That is amazing. Kissing strangers could lead to a lot of ... feedback. I wonder if people who suffer from this disorder compensate through stronger voice, smell recognition?

To see through other's eyes ... something we all need to do more of.

Stars shooting over two hearts in blue entropy: of course, they aren't stars, but othr passions falling to earth, as they must. Very nice. - Brendan

It seems that every reading of anything by Oliver Sacks always leave my head swirling with new ideas and energy. After a recent comment of yours on my blog, about synesthesia, I looked a bit further into the topic and what Sacks has to say and show about it and found myself with the same amazed and grateful reaction.

I have a friend who has face blindness; she tells this very moving story about picking her son up from nursery school and yelling at him for changing his clothes, only to discover that the child she's yelling at is not her son...

And -- just FYI -- both my daughter and I are synaesthetics. It makes for very interesting conversations...
