Doug Aitken's 'Altered Earth'

Browsing through the daily offerings at Nowness, I came upon Altered Earth: Arles, City of Moving Images, a video production by multimedia artist Doug Aitken (b. 1868), who spent three years exploring the Camargue region in the South of France to create the site-specific work commissioned by LUMA Foundation, a nonprofit that supports artistic projects that address broadly environmental issues, human rights, education, and culture. Presented at Arles Summer 2011, Altered Earth is a beautifully conceived interpretation of the landscape, much of which is barren plain and salt marshes, its interior best explored on horseback. Learn more about the production of the film here.

Meri Media has created for the iPad an app (available through iTunes) that lets you experience the region uniquely, if fictionally, each time Altered Earth is viewed.

Here's an excerpt from Altered Earth:

That is very artsy-fartsy visual treat eye candy kind of stuff! It's like an acid trip. Not that I would have ever known what that was like in my colorful years way back when, but I'm just sayin'...
