Thought for the Day

To live a life is not to cross a field.
~ Boris Pasternak

Quoted in Kay Redfield Jamison, Robert Lowell: Setting the River on Fire | A Study of Genius, Mania, and Character (Knopf, 2017), page 368*

Boris Paternak, Russian Poet, Novelist, and Literary Translator; Winner, Nobel Prize in Literature, 1958

* The quote is the concluding line of Pasternak's poem "Hamlet in Russia, A Soliloquy", written in 1946, as translated by Robert Lowell. The translation is found in Lowell's Imitations (Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1961); it was published in Harper's Magazine in September 1961. Note: The translation is discussed in Neil Corcoran's Shakespeare and the Modern Poet.
