Christmas Listening Posts (Poem)

Christmas Listening Posts

Wind-chafed hands   gnarled not
in tinseled wool   hold-
outs on a sidewalk flecked silver
as the moon rimmed with the sun's halo

Heads nod wise to motions of bells   salvation's
army of volunteers sideline   black kettles clinking
counts of coins as night draws the hour
to the due time

The spirit loosing
through a chattering chain of breaths held
and expelled   the spell of midnight
lifting   the darkness felled

Lovely word play and images, in the first stanza, the hand imagery, the gnarled the not knot, the hold-out; just a fine piece all around. May your Christmas be as bright as your light, Maureen, and thanks for all your encouragement.
