Annie Dillard is one of America's finest novelists and essayists; she is also a widely published poet. Born in 1945, she won the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for her acclaimed nonfiction narrative Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Following the publication in 2007 of The Maytrees, Dillard retired from writing. She now paints.

It's a great source of pride for my wife that she and Annie both graduated from the same college in Virginia (Hollins). In fact, Hollins has turned out quite a string of great writers, including Lee Smith.
