Artist Rogene Manas

Oregon Public Broadcasting's Art Beat recently profiled painter Rogene Manas of Eugene. Formerly a successful graphics design artist, Manas now paints, by her own admission, as she pleases. . . and what delightful art she creates. Just take a look at the video below.

As Manas explains in  the OPB interview, she sometimes creates work with paper mache clay, which gives her nature- and folk-inspired art the look of bas-reliefs. I particularly like the tactile quality she achieves using this material. Manas evidences a sure sculpting hand.

Also see Rogene Manas at Haystack Gallery. Manas most recently showed at Guardino Gallery in Portland. Images from the show are available online.

Other images may be seen at Out of My Mind, Rogene Manas's blog. Birds commonly populate her canvases and are the inspiration for some of her mixed media assemblages and papier mache sculptures. Also notable is her figurative series of Everyday Saints, several of which may be seen here.

Maureen, thanks so much for introducing me to Rogene Manas. What a magnificent talent! I loved hearing how she went from graphic designer to artist, but when she finally allowed herself to paint full time, it almost had a crippling effect. I can understand that as we all wish we had "all the time in the world" to write, but sometimes it is when you must write in those odd moments that the best results appear. It just goes to show that the path to your passion may swerve and make hairpin turns but eventually you will get there. Thank goodness for her trip to Mexico and the freedom to become this great artist.

Astringent feeling of freshness came over me as I watched. Loved the latter one of the lilies of the valley and woman holding dove, especially. Paper clay sounds very fun. I must google it now. Where to find it? :) I don't want her to go back to ?landscapes? for goodness sake. Thanks for the zesty inspiration. Good find.
