Artists and Poets Respond to the Pandemic (9)

For today's selections from the online exhibition "Artists and Poets Respond to the Pandemic," I have paired the words of poet Christine Valters Paintner with a work by artist Angela White. This pairing is inspired by the word "Solace."

It is always dawn somewhere /
on this forever turning earth /
eyes just now opening. // [. . . ]
~ from "Always"

Christine's poem is included in her forthcoming collection The Wisdom of Wild Grace (Paraclete Press, October 2020). It was published for the first time as part of the exhibition.

Angela White is a fine artist inspired by physical, spiritual, and emotional memories that create in her work both visual depth and density. Primarily a painter of abstracts and seascapes, Angela imbues the latter with the quiet mystery and power of the natural world.

Angela has exhibited her oil, encaustic, and mixed media paintings in juried shows throughout the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Area, as well as in New York and on the West Coast.

Christine Valters Paintner is an American poet and writer who lives in Galway, Ireland. The author of 12 books of nonfiction on the creative process and contemplative practice, including, most recently, Earth, Our Original Monastery (Ave Maria Press, April 2020), Christine has published poems in both the United States and Ireland in such publications as The Galway Review, Presence: Journal of Spiritual Directors International, A Journal of Catholic Poetry, and Tiferet

The holder of three degrees, including a doctorate in Christian spirituality from Graduate Theological Union, Christine also is a registered expressive arts consultant and educator and is certified in the art of spiritual direction supervision.

St. Michael's Episcopal Church (Arlington, Va.), which supports the arts ministry I lead, is hosting the complete multi-part online exhibition. On the church's new Instagram page, you'll find images of all the artworks, which are augmented daily. Websites and other information about all the participating artists and poets can be found at "Artists' Biographical Information" and "Poets' Biographical Information," respectively. Some artworks, including Angela's, are available to purchase; for information, see "Purchase List of Artworks."
