. . . Art which aims to shock, shocks only once,
while art which aims at beauty never fades.
Art as sensation eventually deadlines our sensations,
while art as wonder wakens them. . . .

excellent thought......
Ah yes -- art, as wonder, does awaken our sensations!
Nice one Maureen.
Hope the windows are bright and shiny and in place. And the snow doesn't come!
So very true and wise.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this. :) Nice takeaway to start the week.
I think the truth may be a little more nuanced. Cheap shock, to the sensibilities, is what I think meets Sacks' description. But aesthetic shock, to sense, to understanding - that shock fades too, but it opens a vista that never closes.
I like this and have found it to be true in my own life. The art that awakens wonder in me ultimately stays with me and changes me for the better.
I cringe at the shock art and then put it in my mental delete file where it leaves no mark.
