Higher Ground (Poem)

Higher Ground

Your eyes snap, shuttering
the tremor behind
your lids,

the scene exactly
as you will always remember
it, your mouth

accepting the salted water,
your throat gritty
now, coarser,

you going out and coming
in so naturally,
push-and-pull,

and you dreaming this
is you,

in your too-thin blue chemise,
the other animals
long before

gaining the higher ground.

Hi, Maureen- The opening stanza is stunning. Yes, the shirt is too thin, but I didn't really notice until I read your poem.
