Chihuly Drawing

Say the name Dale Chihuly and the words glass blower tend to come to mind. But as today's informative video, produced by Chihuly Workshop, shows, the artist has found a deep well of creativity in drawing, which he took up in earnest after a glass blowing accident in 1976. Chihuly's drawings, which he produces spontaneously and with great energy, often are reinterpreted in glass.

It's one thing to think about something. 

It's one thing to have an idea. It's another thing to do it. 

You have to be able to think about it, 

and you have to be able to do it. 

Many things require action, immediately.

Five decades of Chihuly's works — he says he does "a couple thousand a year" — are the subject of Chihuly Drawing (2003). A three-volume survey is forthcoming from Chihuly Workshop.

The exhibition "Chihuly Venetians: From the George R. Stroemple Collection" is up through October 13 at The Paine Art Center and Gardens, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. "Chihuly: Utterly Breathtaking" is on view through October 20 at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
